What is Dragon Boat at the Beach
Dragon Boat at the Beach, founded in 2007, is the local team in the Horry and Georgetown area. It consists of all cancer survivors, men and women, who paddle under the direction and guidance of a trained coach.
Who Can Participate
Any cancer survivor, who is physically capable, regardless of type of cancer may participate. There is no prior experience required. Beginners are welcome, as are family and friends who are welcome to join as reserve crew.
How Often Are The Practices Held
Weather-permitting, paddling practices are held weekly on local inland waterways. The team practices for wellness and/or competitive racing events. Paddlers tone muscles and build strength, balance, and endurance through regular conditioning classes.
What Are The Benefits
Through the shared experience of paddling and related social events, Dragon Boat at the Beach constitutes an active form of support, emphasizing a positive life after cancer.

Roger Jones from Charleston, South Carolina is a cancer survivor and a Dragon Boat enthusiast. He has written a thrilling and uplifting novel, The Final Victory, which was inspired by true events while paddling with an all-cancer survivor dragon boat team that won, against great odds, the 2010 national championship. Roger’s desire is to inspire the readers of The Final Victory, with hope and grace in the midst of their struggles to overcome the obstacles confronting them while giving back to the dragon boat community.
